We’re big fans of the apprenticeship scheme. A number of young people have now started their careers at HB this way, either as trainee accountants. Last September, we employed two new trainee accountants, Max and Taylor, on our apprenticeship scheme. This is what they told us about their first few weeks with HB.
Last September, we employed two new trainee accountants, Max and Taylor, on our apprenticeship scheme who are studying for their Level 2 AAT qualification through Herts Regional College. Abby Debnam is our Level 4 AAT apprentice and this week we are celebrating with all three, as they have all passed exams in the last 7 days – congratulations to you all.
This is what Max & Taylor have told us about their first few weeks into months with HB.
“I have loved every moment so far. Everyone in the team is amazing and welcoming and are very good at helping me understand the task I have been given to do.“
Max Dean – Level 2 apprentice
“So far working at HB has been a great experience. I have learnt many new skills and really settled in well. The people are very friendly and have helped me with any challenges I have faced. My highlight so far was conducting purchase testing during an audit because this was my first real insight into accountancy.“
Taylor young – level 2 apprentice
One of the most important benefits for the young person of being an apprentice, is that they are earning whilst they learn – a key motivator for many. Both of our new apprentices told us that this is why they chose the apprenticeship route over further education and interestingly, both of our newest apprentices had previous retail experience from earning money whilst at school.
Of course, as well as earning and learning, apprentices get to experience the joy of working in an office environment. Our apprentices are an integral part of our team and are included in all our social activities, including our health and mental wellbeing days.

Did you know? We often speak at events about our apprentices and our programme has earned us recognition from Hertford Regional College when we were finalists at the Apprentice Employer Award Scheme 2019.
The Apprenticeship Programme run by HB is beneficial to both the apprentice and the company. As a training firm we support each individual to gain a valuable qualification: our accounting apprentices, for example, have the opportunity to study for the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT qualification) over 4 years, and this is combined with on-the-job training and professional skills development.
